Art, Grief and Healing Come Together at Sandy Library
By Jolie Phanton, For The Mountain Times
The Sandy Library recently welcomed community members to the opening reception of a new art exhibit on August 10, a thoughtful collaboration between Sandy Library and Mt. Hood Hospice. Spearheaded by Alexandra Steinmetz, Librarian from Sandy and Hoodland Libraries, the exhibit brings art and community together to foster connection, conversation and a deeper understanding of grief.
The featured artwork was created by participants in Mt. Hood Hospice’s free community grief support groups. The pieces explore themes of loss, remembrance, love, resilience and healing, offering a glimpse into what grief can look like “inside” when words aren't always enough. Through their artwork, the artists share deeply human stories of loss and healing in ways that can be difficult to express through words alone.

The exhibit is especially meaningful during August, which is recognized as Grief Awareness Month. In recognition of the month, Librarian Brianna Chase created a featured book display highlighting a selection of books about grief, loss and healing. Together, the artwork and book display offer visitors a visual and educational experience, creating opportunities to learn, reflect and connect with resources that may be helpful during times of loss.
We were grateful for the opportunity to experience the artwork up close during the reception and learn more about the stories behind the pieces. Visitors are invited to experience the exhibit at their own pace—whether they are grieving the loss of a loved one, supporting someone who is grieving, or simply interested in the power of art to express experiences that can be difficult to put into words.

Laura Lirette, Bereavement Director at Mt. Hood Hospice, said, “What a wonderful collaboration to see grief-based art on display alongside the curated book displays offering support and information for those who come to the library. It’s a valuable demonstration of what a grief-literate community can look like to support all of us through times of loss and transitions.”
The partnership between the library and Mt. Hood Hospice reflects a shared commitment to supporting the emotional well-being of the community. The library provides an accessible gathering place for learning and connection, while Mt. Hood Hospice offers free community grief support groups for anyone navigating the loss of a loved one. Together, the organizations hope to create more opportunities for open and meaningful conversations about grief and healing.
Grief is a universal experience, but it doesn't have to be experienced in isolation. By bringing art and community together, the library and Mt. Hood Hospice hope visitors find moments of reflection, understanding and hope.

The exhibit will remain on display at the Sandy Library through October 4 and is open to the public during regular library hours. Admission is free.
For those seeking additional support, Mt. Hood Hospice offers free community grief support groups. For more information, call 503-668-5545 or email Laura Lirette at llirette@mthoodhospice.org.
