More Than a Meal: Congregate Dining at the Sandy Senior Center

By John Wallace, For The Sandy Standard

The City of Sandy Parks & Recreation is proud to offer Congregate Dining, a weekly lunch program that provides adults ages 60 and older with more than just a nutritious meal — it offers connection, friendship, and a welcoming place to gather.

Lunch is served every Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at the Sandy Senior Center. While there is no charge to participate, a suggested donation of $5 helps support the program and ensures it can continue serving older adults throughout our community.

For many seniors, sharing a meal with others is an important part of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Studies have shown that regular social interaction can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation while supporting better mental, emotional, and physical health. Congregate dining encourages participants to stay connected with friends, meet new people, and enjoy a sense of belonging within the community.

In addition to providing a balanced meal, the program creates opportunities for conversation, laughter, and lasting friendships. It also serves as a gateway to other activities and resources available through the Sandy Senior Center, helping participants remain engaged and informed about programs that support healthy aging.

To ensure enough meals are prepared, participants are asked to reserve their spot by calling the Sandy Senior Center at (503) 668-5569. Reservations help staff plan meals and reduce food waste.

Transportation is available for those who need assistance getting to the center. Because seating is limited and routes must be scheduled in advance, transportation requests should be made the week before the meal. A suggested donation of $2 helps offset transportation costs.

The City of Sandy is committed to supporting older adults through programs that foster health, independence, and social connection. Congregate Dining is one of the many ways we strive to create opportunities for seniors to stay active, build relationships, and remain engaged in the community.

If you are 60 years of age or older and are looking for a welcoming place to enjoy a delicious meal and great company, we invite you to join us every Tuesday at noon. To make a reservation or learn more, please contact the Sandy Senior Center at 503-668-5569.
