Young riders looking to build confidence and skills on two wheels will have a new opportunity this summer as Sandy Parks and Recreation introduces a Beginner Mountain Bike Camp at Cedar Park Featuring Base Camp.
The four-day camp will take place July 27–30 and will be led by Carol Cohen, a certified mountain bike instructor with extensive biking experience. Cohen's expertise and passion for cycling make her an ideal guide for young participants who are eager to learn the fundamentals of mountain biking in a fun, supportive environment.
The camp is designed for beginning riders ages 6–13 and will focus on developing essential bike-handling skills. Participants will learn proper body positioning, braking techniques, gear shifting, cornering, navigating hills, wheel lifts, track stands, and riding over small features. Riders will also have the opportunity to put their new skills into practice on Cedar Park's popular pump track.
Cedar Park Featuring Base Camp provides the perfect setting for mountain bike instruction. As one of Sandy's newest and most unique recreation destinations, the park offers a safe and accessible environment where riders can learn, practice, and progress. The pump track and surrounding amenities create an ideal outdoor classroom for introducing youth to the sport while building confidence and encouraging healthy outdoor activity.
Two age-specific sessions will be offered. Riders ages 6–9 will meet from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., while riders ages 10–13 will meet from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Enrollment is limited to ensure individualized instruction, with a minimum of five participants and a maximum of eight riders per session.
The cost is $75 for Sandy residents and $85 for non-residents. Parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up participants at Cedar Park Featuring Base Camp, located at 17225 SE Meinig Avenue.
Participants should bring a properly fitting helmet, water bottle, and snacks. Bikes must be in good working condition and equipped with platform pedals and front and rear hand brakes. Single-speed bikes are permitted, although bikes with gears are recommended for climbing. Coaster brakes, worn tires, and kickstands are not allowed.
Registration is now open through Sandy Parks and Recreation. Space is limited, and interested families are encouraged to register early.
