Pioneers Win Season Opener at Barlow 48-21
By Daniel Crawford, The Sandy Standard
The Sandy Pioneer football team traveled to Sam Barlow for the season opener and left with a decisive 48-21 beat down to begin the 2026 campaign.
Sandy ran for six touchdowns while quarterback Micaiah Turin threw for another touchdown and also ran for a score to start the third quarter.
The Pioneers won the battle in the trenches. The offensive and defensive lines were simply too much for the Bruins. Pioneer guard Logan Speckman summed up the team’s dominance at the offense line.
“We are constantly communicating with each other. We are reading their defense and making our adjustments,” said Speckman.
The Pioneers started the game with a fake sweep to the right that drew the befuddled Bruins along for the ride. QB Turin then stopped and turned and tossed a soft pass to a wide open Gracyn Fitch who strolled for a 60-yard TD.
Hudson Willard powered his way for the second score of the game which gave the Pioneers the lead they would never relinquish.
“The guys up front made the blocks and I ran through the hole,” said Willard.
Then RB Mason Frederickson bolted for a 70 yard burst followed by Conner Carey’s run for a fourth TD. James Richards added two more rushing TD’s to seal the lopsided victory.

On defense the high-flying Pioneers confused the Bruins with an array of stunts and blitzes. Sandy grabbed two interceptions while sacking the quarterback two times. Even punter Grant Messinger contributed to the defensive cause when he made a crucial solo tackle on a break away Bruin punt returner who definitely would have scored.
Despite 10 penalties called on the Pioneers, Head Coach Josh Dill was pleased with the team’s effort.
“We have worked our tails off and it was nice to see the players respond tonight. We have some things to clean up for sure. Ten penalties is too many. But our guys were focused tonight and they played a solid game on both sides of the ball against a tough opponent,” said Dill.
The 48 points is the most the Pioneers have ever scored against former 6A division rival Barlow.
Boden Wolf left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. He did not return to the game and his future status is questionable.
