# Sandy High Cheerleaders Head to Nationals

You can practically feel the beaming smile on Head Coach Erin Priester's face when she talks about the seventeen talented young women who make up her cheerleading team. Of course, this veteran coach has every reason to be proud of her squad.

After distinguishing themselves at competitions throughout the area, the cheerleading team is headed to Nationals. Priester is understandably ecstatic over the news. “This is very exciting,” she explains. “It’s the first time in Sandy High School history that the cheerleading team has qualified for Nationals.”

On February 20, the Pioneer Cheer Team will give the competition a run for its money as they go up against the country’s best at the United Spirit Association (USA) Cheerleading Nationals in Anaheim, California. Qualifying for the finals would see the team perform once more the following day, February 21.

This level of recognition has been a long time coming for the team. You’ll see them at nearly every game, pep rally, and school event. Sandy High’s cheerleaders jump and yell and demonstrate athletic skill so extraordinary it’s sometimes difficult to pay attention to the team they’re meant to be supporting.

Priester is proud of her talented young squad. It was just last year that she and the team resumed competition after a six-year hiatus. To be competing at the national level is a huge accomplishment. “The team has worked very hard taking our program to the next level,” says Priester. “Representing Sandy on a national stage will be an amazing opportunity.”

The trip to Nationals is a huge win in and of itself, but Priester and her team are going full steam into the competition. “We are going to bring our Pioneer spirit to the mat and make our school and community proud. Go Pios!”
