The holiday season is full of cheer, but for many, it includes harder times. The Sandy Community Action Center works to provide more opportunities for families and recently received a large donation to enact their goal. However, due to their limited space, they weren’t able to support the donation size, so the Sandy Historical Society provided them a solution: using their basement as storage.
The generous donation came from Clackamas County Disaster Relief after the Action Center saw an increase in support needed by families. This occurred during the government shutdown and Electronic Benefit Transfer disruptance.
“We saw a record-setting number of clients visiting our pantry. In order to help support this need, Clackamas County Disaster Relief gave us a generous momentary donation to help restock our shelves for now and in the immediate future,” Sandy Community Action Center Director Kirsten Pitzer said.
The Sandy Historical Society basement normally acts as a storage room for their collection of artifacts, which they are improving with the help of grant funds. With the basement's spacious area, its versatility as storage space for food was evident.
Prior to gaining access to the Museum space, the Action Center was planning on using a trailer to store the food. The Museum extended a hand which allows the food to be preserved in a controlled environment, retaining the integrity of the food.
“We are grateful to have this partnership with another local nonprofit,” Pitzer said.
The Action Centers food pantry is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., welcoming families to a self-serve pantry shopping experience. Donations are always appreciated to provide for low-income families.
