The coming of spring can bring a massive list of to-dos for cleaning away the skeletons of winter. Seasonal changes bring a time of renewal for your indoor and outdoor spaces. Proper maintenance of the outside of your home can help ensure the life expectancy and keep your warranties intact.
Roof & Gutters
The most critical of seasonal upkeep is your roof and gutters. Debris can aid the growth of moss and algae as well as cause clogging of your gutter systems. Since roof cleanings are the most detailed and unsafe on this list, we recommend letting a professional handle them. If you have attic access, be sure to check your roof’s plywood layer to see if there are any mold or damp spots.
Siding
Rake and trim back any foliage from your siding to lower the chances of mildew growth. Scrub vinyl siding with a water and vinegar mixture and a soft-bristle brush. Rinse away any residue with a hose, not a pressure washer. Keep an eye out for any deteriorating wood or paint, as this can indicate possible rot.
Decks
Before cleaning your deck, remove any furniture and give it a good sweep. Then use a specialized deck cleaner to clear any mildew. Use a hose to rinse it off. Be careful with any pressure washing, as this can damage a deck if not done properly. Call your local professional if you need help resealing or restaining a deck to give it a fresh makeover for your backyard hangouts.
Windows
Windows are the eyes of the home. Warmer weather is the ideal time to remove those grimy streaks from the rainy season. We recommend rinsing with a hose before and after cleaning. A mixture of water, dish soap, and vinegar will have the glass gleaming in no time. Use a squeegee for larger windows and a microfiber cloth for tough-to-remove spots. The same mixture and a gentle brush can be used for any screens.
Fencing
Do a thorough inspection of and remove any debris away from your fence and gates. Check the stability of the posts by pushing against them. Fasten any hardware that has loosened. Washing your fence will depend on what the fence is made of; please refer to fence expertise for further instruction.
Miscellaneous
Besides the main parts of the home, there are a few other places not to forget. If your home has a chimney in use, look into getting it tidied. The National Fire Protection Association recommends having your chimneys cleaned yearly. Lubricate any doors to stop squeaks and prevent rust. A pressure washer is ideal for cleaning your driveway. However, exercise caution when DIYing. Contact your local licensed pest control company to deal with any unwanted buggy guests trying to enter the home. Dust off and wipe down any patio furniture and inspect for any possible repairs that might need to be done.
While freshening up and maintaining your exterior can be an energy-exhaustive effort, peace of mind will be sure to follow. Your home and wallet will thank you in the long run.
