The Hull Foundation and Learning Center provides programs and services unlike any other organization supporting people with sight loss and blindness. Many community members know of the Foundation, yet few realize the full scope of what happens behind the scenes.

One of the most meaningful services offered is the Referral Program, created in partnership with Kaiser and open to anyone seeking support. Each person referred receives a welcome packet filled with information about our programs, along with a signature guide and bump dots with instructions. Every new participant also receives a personal phone call from our Program Director, who walks her own journey through blindness and offers lived-experience support, answers questions, and helps individuals connect with the services that best fit their needs. Anyone with sight loss can join this program by calling (503) 668-6195; because staff may be assisting elsewhere on the property, callers are encouraged to leave a message so their call can be returned promptly.

Following a referral, many people choose to schedule a vision assessment with our volunteer, a retired low-vision specialist who evaluates clients in our office. During the assessment, individuals can try a variety of low-vision tools available at the park, including various magnifiers and CCTVs. If a tool works well for someone, they take it home. We also keep a supply of white canes for those who already use one or need a replacement or backup.

The Foundation offers several online programs as well, providing connection, learning, and community regardless of location. Our current zoom workshops include trivia, travel hacks, book club, and Embrace the Journey, a peer-to-peer connection group.  Each month, the Foundation also sends out an email newsletter to keep the community informed about upcoming events and shares articles and resources for people living with sight loss or blindness.

While online programs are valuable and far-reaching, in-person events remain at the heart of the mission. Oral Hull Park provides a unique and welcoming environment for multi-day gatherings, with amenities designed to support accessibility, comfort, and community.  Our campus serves as a sanctuary for event participants, offering a peaceful and supportive environment where people can learn, explore, and connect. Hull Foundation and Learning Centers retreats are among its most popular programs. Our Friends and Alumni Retreat welcomes long-time guests and newcomers alike for socialization, games, and a variety of activities. The Summer Adventure Retreat will feature white-water rafting, kayaking, indoor skydiving, a trip to Oaks Park, and a final day with a giant inflatable water slide and BBQ.

In December, the Winter Getaway, a beloved tradition, will bring laughter, social activities, and holiday-themed fun. Throughout the year, the Foundation also offers seminars on technology, daily living skills, kitchen safety, and orientation and mobility. Monthly One Day Fun Day outings give participants the chance to try something new and exciting.

Every program and event is designed to help individuals push themselves to keep living fully, even during times when it feels as though everything has changed. People come to the Hull Foundation and Learning Center seeking relief from imposed limitations, finding freedom, encouragement, and the chance to show the world their true capability and strength. Through every service offered, the Foundation strives to empower individuals with sight loss and blindness to live boldly, independently, and with renewed hope.
